Man Stabbed Ex-Girlfriend To Death In Front Of Her Granddaughter And Killed Himself By Drinking Battery Acid
Veronica Goncalves, 48, was found on the ground in a driveway on Crescent Street on Wednesday afternoon. She was pronounced dead after suffering trauma to her head and face, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said.
The investigation identified a suspect in the homicide as Joao Correia, 56. The two had a previous relationship, the DA said.
Correia was found inside an apartment Wednesday night along with bloody clothing. The DA said Correia was taken to the police department for an interview, where he told investigators that he had ingested battery acid and suffered a medical episode.
He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and then flown to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he later died, the DA confirmed.
“This appears to have been a targeted attack and not a random act of violence,” Cruz said. “This is a savage, brutal incident. This woman did not deserve this.”
Goncalves’ nephew, Pedro Rosario, said she was a mother of two and a grandmother and described her as a strong, independent and kind-hearted woman.
“We’re all in a state of shock. That someone would do this to her is beyond belief,” Rosario said. “We’re just trying to put the pieces together.”
Cruz said Goncalves’ 2-year-old grandchild was in a nearby vehicle during the attack.
