A Texas man serving a decades-long prison sentence for the brutal killing of his wife has been found dead while in state custody.
On January 16, 2026, prison officials say 24-year-old Jared James Dicus was discovered hanging by the neck inside a single-person cell. According to a state death report, staff initiated life-saving measures after he was found, but those efforts were unsuccessful. Responding EMS personnel pronounced Dicus deceased just before 11 p.m.
Dicus had been incarcerated at the Wainwright Unit in Houston County following his 2024 guilty plea to the murder of his wife, Anggy Diaz. Court records show Diaz was found decapitated inside the couple’s home in January 2023, just months after they were married in October 2022.
Following his plea, Dicus was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the killing.
