A man is facing multiple charges after carjacking a vehicle with an infant inside and crashing into several cars in the Loop on Sunday.
According to Chicago police, Pherris Harrington, 26, allegedly entered a parked car with the engine running and a 2-month-old boy secured in a baby seat around 11 a.m. in the 1500 block of North Clark Street.
According to police, the boy’s father, 41, jumped on top of the car hood while his mother, 37, clung to the vehicle’s doorframe. “Stop, there’s a baby inside of the car,” they both yelled, according to police.
According to police, Harrington ignored their pleas and drove away at high speed while both parents clung to the vehicle.
According to police, the boy’s father was thrown from the hood of the car, and his mother let go after being dragged. According to police, Harrington struck an unmarked police vehicle and several other cars without stopping.
According to police, Harrington got out of the car and ran at the Lower Wacker Drive to Upper Wacker Drive exit ramp.
Harrington defied officers’ orders to stop and clung to a fence pole. According to police, live rounds fell out of his pocket as he was arrested in the 100 block of North Lower Wacker Drive.
According to officials, the baby was discovered facedown on the floorboard beneath the front passenger seat. He was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Both parents declined medical attention.
According to officials, Harrington kicked a police officer in the shin while being loaded into an ambulance. According to police, Harrington also spat on the shoulder of an EMT twice while on his way to the hospital to be treated for breathing problems.
Harrington, of South Chicago, was arrested and charged with aggravated kidnapping, vehicular hijacking with a weapon, ammunition possession without a valid FOID, resisting a peace officer, two counts of battery, and one count of fleeing the scene.
Police initially stated that the baby was unharmed and had been safely reunited with its family.
Harrington’s next court date is set for November 23.
