A woman is charged with murder and child neglect and a man is charged with child neglect, after a 2 year old little girl died from a fentanyl overdose.
The probable cause affidavits for Njerin Samuel and Eric Jones says DHS had been in contact with them last September when Samuel tested positive for fentanyl when she gave birth to a different baby.
It says at the time, Samuel told DHS she took a percocet pill from a friend during her pregnancy.
It says Samuel and Jones received in-home services from DHS at the time.
It says on February 2nd, Jones called 911, reporting the possible overdose of a child.
It says the hospital determined the 2 year old girl had fentanyl in her system.
It says Samuel told police, the little girl said she didn’t feel well the night before and had something in her mouth.
It says Samuel said Jones woke her up and told her something was wrong with the little girl and Samuel noticed blue residue around the girl’s nose.
It says Samuel told police she’s used fentanyl in the past by crushing blue pills and snorting them.
Police say in addition to the 2 year old, there were 4 children under the age of 6 at the apartment.
It says after police interviewed Samuel at the hospital, she left her 2 year old, who was in critical condition, and went back to the apartment.
It says police found a crushed up blue pill on the floor of the kitchen along with 2 cut up straws with blue powder residue. (later confirmed to be fentanyl)
It says Samuel later admitted using fentanyl within the past week and said she was high when she put away the remaining fentanyl and didn’t know where she put it.
It says she also admitted hearing sirens and taking a straw out of the dresser and throwing it in the trash.
It says the victim’s 5 year old brother said, he saw his sister get into his mommy’s blue nose medicine in the drawer by her bed and his sister couldn’t breathe and didn’t wake up.
The little girl was removed from life support the next day.
It says Jones denied knowing Samuel was using fentanyl but a family member said that was a lie, that Jones had texted her about Samuel in January, saying Samuel was high and needed help.
It says there were texts between Jones and Samuel discussing her fentanyl use and texts and photos on Jones’ phone associated with the sale of narcotics.
Jones has previous convictions for selling drugs.
This is a 2017 DOC booking photo of Jones.
I didn’t find a previous one for Samuel.
Once they are in custody, I’ll post their current booking photos.
