A Cook County man is accused of crashing into an Uber driver and a police car in Gary, Indiana on Tuesday night while fleeing from police.
A Lake County, Indiana Sheriff’s Department officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a black SUV near 44th Avenue and Grant Street in Gary around 11:30 p.m., according to authorities.
The driver failed to stop for a traffic signal and lacked a functioning headlight and license plate.
Authorities said the driver fled at high speed north on Grant Street, then entered westbound Interstate I-80/94 and traveled toward Chicago.
Another Lake County officer joined the pursuit and pursued the driver all the way to the 115th Street exit in Chicago.
The suspect had then rear-ended an Uber.
Lake County officers then attempted to stop the fleeing vehicle using a Precision Immobilization Technique.
According to authorities, the SUV struck a Lake County officer’s patrol vehicle twice before coming to a stop.
The SUV’s occupants then exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
Officers from the Chicago Police Department were alerted to the suspects’ last known location, and they found the alleged driver in a marsh near South Doty Avenue.
Elijah Singleton, 20, of South Holland, was identified as the suspect by police.
Officers discovered a 10 mm extended handgun magazine containing 16 live rounds in the SUV.
The vehicle also contained a.40 caliber magazine with two hollow-point live rounds and unopened packages of suspected marijuana.
Singleton was booked into a Cook County jail pending extradition, according to authorities.
He was also wanted in South Holland for theft.
Singleton could face multiple charges, including resisting law enforcement, refusing to identify himself, reckless driving, and marijuana possession, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. In addition, he will be cited for traffic violations.
Authorities stated that he may face charges for spitting on a Chicago police officer during his arrest.
The Uber driver and police officer who were hit by the SUV escaped unharmed.
