A judge ordered a 30-year-old man held without bail this weekend in connection with the fatal stabbing of a good Samaritan who had tried to step in after he witnessed a teen girl being physically attacked at a Berwyn store, court records show.
Fernando Barrios, 30, was ordered held in Cook County Jail by Judge David Navarro during a hearing Saturday, according to an online broadcast of the hearing and a document presented in court by a Cook County prosecutor. Barrios had been charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder after Berwyn police say he fatally stabbed Humberto Guzman, 32, and stabbed a second man who tried to stop Barrios from fleeing after the attack on Guzman, according to Berwyn police and the court document.Advertisement
According to Berwyn police Chief Micheal Cimaglia, officers were called to Valle’s Produce at 6323 W. Cermak Road about 10:15 a.m. Friday for a report of “a fight involving customers.” When they arrived, they located a man, later identified as Guzman, who appeared to have been stabbed multiple times. Other officers located a second man outside the store who also appeared to have been stabbed, according to a statement from Cimaglia.
In a statement read before Navarro in court Saturday, a prosecutor explained the series of events leading to the fatal encounter began when Barrios was approaching the front of a checkout line and a girl approached the female checkout clerk and asked how much a drink cost. Without knowing that the child was visiting her mother, the clerk, Barrios accused the girl of “cutting” in line, according to prosecutors and police.
