Federal authorities said Friday that a Chicago man has been charged with murdering a teenage girl in 2016 in order to advance his gang status.
Patrick Johnson was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of murder in aid of racketeering.
Johnson, 27, is accused of shooting Veronica Lopez, 15, while she was riding in a car on Lake Shore Drive over Memorial Day weekend in 2016.
Hundreds of people were shot in Chicago over a three-day period, with at least six people killed.
“The indictment alleges that the Milwaukee Kings is a criminal organization whose members and associates engaged in narcotics trafficking and committed acts of violence, including murder and assault, to acquire and preserve the gang’s territory,” according to the US Attorney’s Office.
Johnson was apprehended on Friday. There was no lawyer listed in the federal case file as of yet.
