33-year-old man fatally shot by deputies after grabbing handgun during San Marcos traffic stop

(Video went viral but now we have Bodycam)

A San Diego County Sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop on a red Hyundai Sonata in the 600 block of North Twin Oaks Valley Road shortly after 9 p.m. on February 18 for a vehicle code violation.

Registration and VIN checks were inconsistent and the steering column showed damage, suggesting the car may have been stolen.

Additional deputies and a Palomar College police officer responded.

The 33-year-old male passenger ignored repeated commands, rolled up his window, reached to the floorboard and armed himself with a semiautomatic handgun.

Deputies safely removed the 21-year-old female driver from the vehicle.

The passenger refused orders to drop the weapon and raised the gun.

Five deputies and the officer opened fire, fatally striking him.
