A Chicago man faces weapons charges after lifting his shirt to reveal a handgun in his waistband to a passerby in front of Notre Dame College Prep in Niles at 8:48 a.m. Thursday, police said.
The man, identified as Carlos Kamber, 51, whose last known address was in the 5700 block of W. Giddings Street, Chicago, was expected to appear in bond court in Skokie Friday, charged with one Class 3 felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and two misdemeanor counts of aggravated assault.
Witnesses reported that a male suspect lifted up the front of his t-shirt as he was walking across Dempster Street, revealing a handgun pressed against his waistband, Niles police said. Staff members at Notre Dame, 7655 W. Dempster St., were notified immediately by Niles police and “took precautionary measures to ensure no one was to enter or leave the school,” police said, adding that said no shots were fired.
Police said officers dispatched to the scene found Kamber at a Pace bus stop in the 7600 block of Dempster at 9:09 a.m. with the semi-automatic handgun still in his waistband. Police took Kamber into custody.
Notre Dame officials told the Journal classes began at 8 a.m. and that students were inside the school at the time the incident was reported. The school was placed on a soft lockdown when Notre Dame officials were advised about the situation by police.
