Man faces capital murder charge in Wednesday morning Tuscaloosa shooting
Cornelius Jones has been charged with Capital Murder, and Shooting into and Occupied Vehicle and will committed to jail with no bond.
Tuscaloosa Police were called to the area of the Chevron located at 3800 Joe Mallisham Parkway at 7:30 AM on a shooting. One victim was found having been shot and transported to DCH for treatment.
The victim was rushed to surgery, but lifesaving efforts failed. Soon after the shooting, the suspect turned himself in at the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
Investigators identify the suspect as Cornelius Rashad Jones, age 31. The Violent Crimes Unit was called out to assume investigation.
The shooting was witnessed by numerous persons, and captured on video according to authorities. They said the victim, identified as John Weston Horton, age 50, was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle parked in the parking lot, when Jones approached and shot him through the passenger vehicle window.
Investigators determined that the victim was currently in a relationship with a woman with whom the suspect had been in a previous relationship.
The woman was driving the car the victim was a passenger in. She was not injured. Investigators believe anger over the new relationship is believed to be the motive behind the shooting.
