A man has been arrested after human remains were found inside a barrel dumped in a South Carolina lake, officials said Friday.
Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said Eric Shawn Fetzer, 25, of Chesnee, was charged Friday with destruction, desecration or removal of human remains.
Mueller said investigators expect to make additional arrests in the case after the barrel was dumped into Lake Thicketty and was found Thursday afternoon near a boat ramp off Trout View Road.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said earlier that the body had been in the container for a number of days.
We learned Friday that the body was sent to Spartanburg County for an autopsy because authorities say that the person was killed in Spartanburg County.
Mueller also said Friday that Cherokee County investigators interviewed a person of interest in the death Thursday night.
He said that is what led to the conclusion the person was killed in Spartanburg County.
