A Newark man was arrested for attempted murder on Monday after attacking a woman in the Town of Arcadia and leaving her with critical injuries, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Chet Dewolf, at some location in Arcadia, attacked the victim, slit her throat, and then stabbed her multiple times before fleeing the area.
The victim was transported to Strong Hospital via Mercy Flight where she remains in critical condition.
Deputies said they found Dewolf a short time later and arrested him. He was charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault.
Dewolf was taken to Wayne County Jail and will later appear at Wayne County CAP Court.
In a follow-up interview with Sheriff Milby of Wayne County, it was revealed an 18-year-old was the victim of the stabbing and had been friends with Dewolf for a while. Sheriff Milby says although the relationship seemed to be platonic, it’s still an instance of domestic violence.
According to the 18-year-old victim, the two of them had been driving all over the place from other counties and made a stop at Norsen Park in Arcadia.
When they got out of the vehicle, Dewolf allegedly stabbed her several times and cut her throat. Sheriff Milby says Dewolf then fled the scene, leaving her there. The woman called her mom, who called 9-1-1 and deputies arrived on scene.
The Sheriff says the victim has no idea why Dewolf did this.
Sheriff Milby says even though nothing shows they had an intimate relationship, it can still escalate to domestic violence.
“It’s still a good idea, no matter who you’re with. The suggestions that they give you in relation to domestic violence and certainly at any time, human beings can take relationships from one step to the next. And things can become domestic.”
