An 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged with criminal homicide after New Castle police say he confessed to shaking a 3-year-old girl, which ultimately led to the child’s death.
Police said they responded to a home in the 900 block of Sankey Street on April 24 for an unresponsive 3-year-old girl.
The child was taken to UPMC Jameson and then taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to police.
Police said on April 28, they learned the child died at UPMC Children’s Hospital and an autopsy was being performed.
On Monday, detectives took 18-year-old Quadir Poland, the partner of the child’s mother, into custody.
Police said Poland confessed to shaking the child repeatedly, which ultimately led to the child’s death.
He has been charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault.
He is being held in the Lawrence County Jail without bond.
