Man Arrested After Children Found Locked Inside Dog Kennels In Nevada Apartment
A Nevada man has been arrested after police say they found a pair of children locked inside dog kennels inside his Las Vegas apartment, according to reports.
Travis Doss was arrested on Sunday, June 11, and is facing more than a dozen child abuse charges, as well as an attemper murder charge.
According to the arrest report, police were dispatched to a Walgreens, located at Valley View and Flamingo, after a woman was found hiding in the stock room.
Police made contact with the woman and were informed that she was hiding from her husband, who was allegedly trying to kill her. The woman also told police that there were three children locked in dog kennels inside their apartment.
Officers would later make contact with the man, identified as Doss, outside the drugstore while other officers went to the apartment, located less than a mile away.
When authorities entered the apartment, they found two children in kennels that were locked with a padlock. The report listed those children’s birth years as 2011 and 2013.
A total of seven children were involved, three of whom are triplets. The children’s birth years range from 2011-2021.
Once the kennels were opened by police, one of the children was able to get out unassisted while the other couldn’t. The officers observed black eyes that were swollen shut on the children, as well as multiple marks, and bruises on both of them.
One was taken to the hospital and was listed in critical condition. No update had been provided as of Thursday.
Blood work showed he was extremely malnourished, was at high risk for refeeding syndrome, was anemic, and needed a blood transfusion, among other conditions listed in the 21-page police report.
The doctor at UMC said that the child would have died if he had not been brought to the hospital and that he had not seen a child that severely beaten “since his military tour in Afghanistan where he observed children who had been dipped in hot oil.”
Another nurse stated that this had been the worse case of abuse she had seen in years.
In an interview with police, Doss confessed to beating the kids, except the baby, with belts, cords, a skillet, and his hands. He said he also allowed the triples to beat one of the other children.
Doss claimed that his wife, identified as Amanda Stamper, would not help with the children because she wasn’t their mother. She would later be arrested as well after an investigation determined that she had committed the crime of child neglect.
When asked about why the kids were locked inside kennels, Doss told police that they would be locked inside for days to prevent them from stealing food in the middle of the night. He also knew that he couldn’t keep beating one of the children and needed him to heal in the cage.
The report continued detailing several incidents of abuse that were very disturbing.
Court records show Doss is being held at the Clark County Detention Center under $250,000 bail.
