Deputies found Shane Earl Rader unresponsive in his cell at about 7:45 p.m. They and medics tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead.
Rader had been in jail since June 15 after he was arrested when police said he got into a domestic violence situation at the home of the mother of his children just outside of Newberg. Police said he shot his son with a high-power pellet gun and then fled with him and his 6-year-old brother.
Police later tracked Rader down and arrested him after he had dropped the boys off at a hospital.
He was facing a list of charges including attempted aggravated murder, assault, burglary, and domestic violence.
The Newberg-Dundee Police Department is assisting the sheriff’s office in the investigation into Rader’s death.
The 3-year-old boy was seriously hurt and underwent surgery. At the time of the incident, the sheriff’s office said he was in serious condition.
