Bond was denied Tuesday for a second Cook County man accused of robbing an elderly woman at gunpoint in a Walmart parking lot in Villa Park before fleeing on a high-speed chase with police.
Sincere Harrington, 19, of Chicago, appeared in the DuPage County courthouse on Monday for a bond hearing before Judge Brian Telander.
Harrington and Jarquez Jones, of Maywood, were charged with armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated fleeing and eluding.
Harrington is currently on probation in Cook County for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
According to prosecutors, on December 5, Villa Park officers responded to a call about a person in a car with a gun near Route 83 and Riverside Drive.
Officers arrived on the scene to find the suspect vehicle driving over the grass and exiting the Walmart parking lot southbound on Route 83.
Officers turned on their lights and sirens and began a pursuit.
Following the pursuit, which allegedly reached speeds of up to 90 mph on I-290 and necessitated the use of a Chicago Police Department helicopter, Harrington and Jones abandoned the vehicle and were apprehended in Chicago.
Jones was discovered in a garbage can, and Harrington was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.
Officers discovered two guns at the scene, a.45 caliber Glock 30 and a 9mm Glock 17, about 100 yards from the defendants’ vehicle. The Glock 17 was modified to fire as a fully automatic weapon.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the defendants approached an elderly woman in the Walmart parking lot as she was loading groceries into her car.
According to prosecutors, the driver of the vehicle pointed a gun at the woman and stole her purse.
“The denial of bond for the second man allegedly involved in this case reinforces the message that in DuPage County we do not take allegations such as these lightly,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
“We are professional and objective; but we can’t help to have the utmost empathy for the victim who could be anyone’s elderly mother or grandmother,” said Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas.
Harrington’s arraignment is set for December 22.
