LOTS OF RAIN/SOME SNOW AHEAD: Rain becomes widespread across Alabama this afternoon ahead of a dynamic weather system. Rain amounts of 1-2 inches are likely through tomorrow morning… it will be a good soaking statewide.
A few strong storms are possible near the Gulf Coast, where a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms has been defined by SPC tonight.
SNOW POTENTIAL TOMORROW: There is little change in the forecast thinking. Colder air will roll into Alabama tomorrow with temperatures falling into the mid 30s during the day. Rain will change to light snow over the northern half of the state. A few snow flakes are even possible over South Alabama.
Only two counties in Alabama, Jackson and DeKalb, are under a winter storm watch (the northeast corner of the state). Snow amounts of 1-3 inches are possible there. Light accumulation is possible north of I-20 in grassy areas, generally under one inch.
Temperatures should be above freezing (mid 30s) as the snow falls, and roads will be just wet. However, some patchy black ice is possible tomorrow night as we drop below freezing and the sky clears.
I should also note that it will be pretty windy tonight and tomorrow; winds will be sustained at 10-20 mph with gusts to 35 mph in spots (pressure gradient winds).
This system will have a much higher impact on areas north and northeast of Alabama… states like Tennessee, Northeast Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia. Significant amounts of snow and ice are likely there.
And, of course, the forecast could change, so watch for updates over the weekend!
