On Feb. 5-6 the FDA announced an update on an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes that has spanned multiple years and multiple states nationwide.
The outbreak is connected to various dairy products including queso fresco and cotija cheese manufactured by Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc. and sold under a variety of brand names.
In January 2024, Hawaii State Department of Health’s Food and Drug Branch found a sample of Rizo Bros Aged Cotija cheese tested positive for L. monocytogenes.
Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc. voluntarily recalled one batch of Rizo Bros Aged Cotija Mexican Grating Cheese in response to the test on Jan. 11, 2024.
Now, the CDC and FDA have reopened an ongoing investigation with cases dating back as far as 2014. An analysis of the cotija cheese sample in January linked the strain of Listeria found in the cheese to the multi-year outbreak.
Following that confirmation, Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc. has temporarily stopped production and distribution of all its dairy products.
In response to the investigation, Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc. has voluntarily recalled all “sell by” dates of its dairy products include ricotta, yogurt, queso requeson, queso para freir, queso fresco, queso crema, panela, panela barra, Oaxaca cheese, multiple varieties of cotija, and multiple varieties of crema.
Those recalled products may be sold under the following brand names:
