Last year in the city of Chicago at least 35 shots, 5 fatally, in Labor Day weekend gun violence.

At least five people were killed, and 34 others were hurt in shootings across Chicago during Labor Day weekend, according to police.

Total casualties: As of Sunday, August 31, 2025, police reported 35 people were shot, with five of the shootings being fatal.

Victim ages: The victims’ ages spanned from a 16-year-old to a 50-year-old.

Notable incidents:

South Shore apartment shooting: On Friday night, police responded to a shooting in the 7700-block of South Essex Avenue, where a 25-year-old woman was fatally shot.

Eberhart Avenue shooting: The weekend’s first shooting occurred Friday on South Eberhart Avenue, where a 43-year-old man was wounded in the shin during an argument.

Between midnight and 12:20 a.m., a 41-year-old man was walking south in the 5100 block of South State Street when he heard shots and felt pain. He suffered a graze wound to the left leg and was taken to Provident Hospital of Cook County in good condition.

At 1:11 a.m., multiple men drove by in two vehicles in the 2700 block of West Haddon Avenue, and several of the men opened fire at people standing outside. A 39-year-old woman was shot in the chest and was taken to Humboldt Park Health. A 39-year-old man was shot in the neck and was taken to St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital.

A 26-year-old woman was shot in the right leg, and a 32-year-old woman in the right side of her buttocks. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. All the victims were in good condition.

At 1:20 a.m., a 30-year-old man walked into Jackson Park Hospital and told police he was outside in the 7500 block of South Kingston Avenue when a green sedan went by. A man in the car took out a gun and shot the victim, police said. The victim was shot in the left ankle. His condition was not specified.

At 1:39 a.m., three men — ages 41, 43, and 46 — were standing outside in the 1900 block of West 17th Street when someone came up and shot them all. The 41-year-old man and the 43-year-old man were each shot in the right leg and were reported in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, while the 46-year-old man was struck multiple times in the body and died at the same hospital.

At 2:52 a.m., a 33-year-old man was in a quarrel with another man he knew inside a house in the 6300 block of South Elizabeth Street when the other man took out a gun and shot him before fleeing. The 33-year-old man was shot in the head and died at the scene.

At 3 a.m., a 31-year-old man told police he was outside in the 8100 block of South Harper Avenue when two vehicles went by, and their occupants began shooting at each other.

The victim said he was caught in the crossfire and was shot in the left thigh. He was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition.

The violence mirrors previous Labor Day weekends in the city, where high numbers of shootings and fatalities have occurred. For example, in 2021, over 50 people were shot, and at least four were killed. In 2016, a particularly violent weekend ended with 7 dead and 34 wounded.
