Iowa – Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, joined a number of other high-profile Republicans Thursday night in visiting Iowa this year, as speculation continues over who might head up the GOP ticket in 2024.
Jordan, a firebrand Congressman and strident defender of former President Donald Trump who’s popular with the GOP base, spoke at a Dallas County GOP dinner in West Des Moines Thursday night.
Jordan did not say whether he’s considering a run for the presidency and has yet to be the object of national media speculation about a run, but did say who he’d like to see run: Trump.
“I think at the worst for these various candidates who are visiting, they might have gotten themselves known by some movers and shakers in Republican politics here in Iowa,” Goldford said. “It’s not a waste.”
He said Trump is close to making a decision.
KCCI political analyst Dennis Goldford said Trump’s decision to run or not is the “elephant in the room” when it comes to the 2024 candidate field, considering his “solid, unshakable base” in the GOP.
But, Goldford said even if Trump decides to run, politicians who do decide to visit Iowa, home to the first-in-the-nation caucuses, aren’t wasting their time and potentially laying the groundwork for future aspirations.
“I talked to him yesterday, I’m convinced he’s going to, you know, he’s thinking about this fine governor you have as part of that amazing ticket,” Jordan said.
