Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has spoken with Colorado’s Deion Sanders about the team’s head coaching vacancy, per a report from Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports.
Sanders is considered a top candidate, and discussions are expected to continue. While a formal interview hasn’t been scheduled, there is mutual interest, according to Schultz. The Cowboys plan to interview other candidates as well after parting ways with Mike McCarthy on Monday after five seasons.
Sanders, 57, has been linked with the Cowboys job given his strong ties to Dallas. He played five seasons with the Cowboys (1995-99), one of the stars for Dallas’ last Super Bowl-winning team in 1995.
Sanders previously said he didn’t plan on coaching in the NFL following his second season at Colorado. He helped engineer an impressive turnaround in Boulder this past year, taking the Buffaloes from a 4-8 record in 2023 to 9-4 in 2024. He also had the Heisman Trophy winner in Travis Hunter, as well as his son, top quarterback prospect Shedeur Sanders, leading the charge.
Yes, Sanders denied rumors connecting him to NFL openings this year, reaffirming his focus on Colorado. However, he said there was only one way he’d consider returning to the league, where he became one of the best cornerbacks of all-time. He’d want to coach his sons, Shedeur and Shilo.
