Jenna Jameson posted a video on her Instagram account on Monday to share the news about her health with her half a million followers. She was hospitalized recently because her muscles were so weak that she had trouble standing. And now, after undergoing numerous tests and spending five days in a Hawaii hospital, Jameson confirmed that she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Jameson is still in the hospital undergoing treatment for Guillain-Barré, and said Monday that she is getting infusions of immunoglobulin therapy, the typical treatment for the disorder.
What is Guillain-Barré syndrome?
According to the CDC, it is a “rare, autoimmune disorder in which a person’s own immune system damages the nerves, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis.” The symptoms can last from weeks to several years. Most fully recover but some have permanent nerve damage.
Among the most common symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome is weakness in the arms and legs. And in severe cases, it can affect the muscles that control breathing. What causes this autoimmune disorder is still unknown, although many patients who have suffered from it have suffered from some type of infection before. According to the CDC, there are only 1 or 2 cases in the US per 100,000 people reported every year.
