Japan just set a world record with 1 million GB/sec internet speed!

Imagine downloading 10,000 4K movies in one second. Japan’s new optical fiber just made it possible.

In a leap for global internet infrastructure, Japanese researchers have shattered records by transmitting data at 1.02 petabits per second — that’s one million gigabytes every second — across more than 1,100 miles using a specialized optical fiber no thicker than what we use today.

This incredible feat was accomplished with a 19-core fiber, effectively turning a single data lane into a 19-lane expressway.

The system remained stable over long distances thanks to a new signal amplification technique and a sophisticated digital processing method that removed interference and cleaned up the data.

This breakthrough isn’t just about ultra-fast downloads — it paves the way for a data-ready future powered by AI, 6G, VR, and billions of connected devices.

Unlike previous high-speed fiber demonstrations that were limited by short transmission ranges, this setup traveled 1,808 kilometers without degrading the signal.

With the volume of global data traffic expected to explode, this scalable, high-capacity fiber could be key to supporting the demands of a hyper-connected world.
