An election official in North Carolina arrested and accused of placing narcotics in his grandchildren’s ice cream has resigned.

James Edwin Yokeley Jr., a former election official and Republican chairman of the Surry County Board of Elections in North Carolina, resigned on Thursday, August 28, 2025, following his arrest for allegedly placing narcotics in his grandchildren’s ice cream.

Police reviewed video footage showing Yokeley placing pills, later identified as MDMA and cocaine, into the ice cream. Medics confirmed the children did not ingest the drugs.

Yokeley flagged down a police officer in Wilmington, stating his two granddaughters found “two hard objects” in their ice cream.

Yokeley maintained he was “falsely accused” but resigned for the benefit of the Board of Elections, stating confidence in being exonerated.

The aftermath:

Yokeley was released on a $100,000 bond. The State Board of Elections is seeking Republican nominations to appoint a new Surry County chair.
