The man accused of shooting Norton Police Chief James Lane pleaded not guilty in Wise County Circuit Court Monday.
James Buckland appeared court for arraignment. The hearing comes after Buckland was indicted on 17 criminal counts related to the shooting that injured Chief Lane.
Some of those charges include attempted capital murder of a police officer, assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, and aggravated malicious wounding.
Buckland pleaded not guilty on all counts. His trial is scheduled for January 31 through February 4 of next year. That’s when Buckland is next expected in court.
Buckland remains in the custody of the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield.
