Twenty-three people have been arrested following a recent two-week operation by Internet Crimes Against Children task force investigators with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
The arrests included charges that ranged from the production and possession of child pornography, lewd acts with a child under the age of 14 to bestiality that involved at least two dogs, Sheriff Jim Cooper said.
Cooper described internet crimes against children as an issue that “really took off during COVID” and remains “rampant.”
“It is graphic what people are doing to kids,” Cooper said and urged parents to be on guard.
“I don’t care how smart you think your kid is,” Cooper said. “Your kid is still a kid. They can be manipulated by an adult.”
The operation took place from June 18 to July 1 and included deputies serving 37 search warrants.
Scott Triplett, with Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, said that three of those arrested were committing crimes in Sacramento County. The DA office’s current caseload is 80, up from 20 cases eight years ago.
Cooper cited progress in the task force’s work as a result of funding ramping up from $200,000 two years ago to now $1 million a year.
That has helped to purchase more computers and other equipment, he said
