In Missouri it is now illegal for homeless people to sleep on state owned land.
Burger says the law may disperse large camps of homeless people, but it likely won’t keep them from living on the streets.
“The encouragement is to more work with not allowing people to stay in these unsafe environments,” he said. “And to create encouragements to get people out of those situations.”
He said this will hopefully get more of the homeless community into shelters.
“We want them to get services. These camps that grow often are not safe. They’re not good for people,” he said.
He’s hoping the law will be a catalyst for change but says it can’t be the only tool.
