RawNews1st/Tech – Hurricane Ian’s track is continuing to shift east, increasing the risk of the storm making landfall further south on Florida’s west coast as a major hurricane.
Forecasters say Ian will slow down as it approaches the Gulf Coast, prolonging the wind and rain impacts of the storm.
Hurricane Ian is a monster.
It has re-emerged off of Cuba and into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico packing maximum sustained winds of 115mph with higher gusts around the well-defined eye.
Additional strengthening is expected as Ian tracks towards the north today and into Wednesday.
Ian will likely make landfall somewhere near or just to the south of Tampa Bay late Wednesday night and into early Thursday morning.
Conditions will rapidly deteriorate later today and into Wednesday along the Florida coast as Ian approaches from the south.
LIFE THREATENING STORM SURGE in Tampa Bay is expected. Anywhere from 7 to 10 FEET upwards of 12-15 feet is possible.
As Ian moves inland, it will weaken, but will continue to produce heavy rainfall, and localized flooding.
Ian will track over the Florida peninsula towards the northeast through Friday, and eventually get into Georgia and South Carolina as a Tropical Depression Saturday and into Sunday.
Early estimates of 3-6″ of rainfall for Georgia and South Carolina with up to 10″ possible along the coastline.
Widespread areas of 5-10″ of rain in Florida with localized areas especially in the Interstate 4 corridor from Tampa Bay to Orlando to Daytona Beach getting up to 20″ of rain.
