RawNews1st/Tech- Hurricane Ian is set to move onshore in southwestern Florida over the next several hours. Ian will likely produce extensive damage in many communities in southwestern and west-central Florida.
Extreme winds (115+ mph), flooding, potentially record-breaking storm surge, and tornadoes are ongoing concerns in the Florida Peninsula today into tonight and Thursday.
No significant direct local impacts from Hurricane Ian are expected in south Alabama or northwest Florida, thankfully. Plenty of sunshine is in store for communities across the local area today.
High temperatures will be in the upper-70s and near 80 in many locales. While a few showers will be possible Thursday evening and again on Friday, I expect most local communities to remain dry.
IAN TO MAKE LANDFALL IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA… Hurricane Ian is set to be the 7th major hurricane landfall in the continental United States since 2017 today.
Harvey and Irma made landfalls in 2017, followed by Michael in 2018, Laura and Zeta in 2020, and Ida just last year in 2021.
This is also the 7th straight year with at least one hurricane making landfall in the continental United States. In 2020, six hurricanes made landfall in the U.S. Hurricane Sally was one of those six.
TROPICAL WAVE IN ATLANTIC… Other than Hurricane Ian, the only other tropical system are keeping an eye on is located in the Atlantic Ocean well away from any land areas.
The National Hurricane Center indicates a tropical wave located closer to Africa than the Lesser Antilles has a 70% chance of becoming a named tropical storm. IF development happens, the system is expected to remain far away from any land areas. Next name on the tropical naming list: Julia.
BREEZY CONDITIONS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS… Due to Hurricane Ian being in the southeastern Gulf near the Florida coast AND due to a frontal boundary nearby our local area, pressure gradient winds will be possible across the region today into Thursday.
This means 20-30 mph wind gusts will be possible throughout the day.
CRITICAL ALERT FOR WILDFIRES TODAY… The Storm Prediction Center (the agency who we are all accustomed to because of their convective outlooks) issues fire weather alerts on days when prescribed burns could easily get out of control.
Today is one of those days across the entirety of south Alabama and northwest Florida. ALL local communities are involved in the “red level” Critical Fire Day alert.
