Momentary crashed driver backs into 91-year-old woman, gets out to check on her – then drives away when she dies on sidewalk. Police are offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the driver, who is still at large.
Surveillance footage captured the horrific moment when a driver ran over and killed a 91-year-old woman on her morning walk, got out of the truck to check on her and then drove off.
Soon, Kim, 91, a mother and grandmother who immigrated to Los Angeles from Korea 30 years ago, is said to be the victim.
Surveillance footage released by the Los Angeles Police Department shows Kim taking a leisurely walk on Monday morning with her walker in the University Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles.
At one point, Kim is turned away from a white pickup truck backing out of an alley.
The pickup appears to have a stack of mattresses in the cargo bed that may be obscuring the driver’s view to the rear.
The driver, identified by police as a woman, is caught reversing ‘unsafely’ and hitting Kim.
At one point, she stops and drives forward, running over Kim again, before getting out of the vehicle.
Once out of the vehicle, the driver looks at Kim on the sidewalk, then gets back into the truck and pulls her car off the road.
Again, she gets out of the truck and stays with the vehicle for about three minutes before getting back in and driving away, the LAPD said.
The driver does not appear to offer any assistance to the injured grandmother.
“She was very independent,” Hyun’s wife, Susan Cho, told KTLA. ‘She lived on her own without complaining. She enjoyed her independence.’
Susan Cho begs neighbors to provide information about the driver, who she says is known in the area.
“We understand that the woman who hit her is someone you know in the area,” Susan Cho said. “People recognized the car and that she had some sort of routine of putting away mattresses and other things around the area… It gives us some hope that she’ll be found.”
