Federal agents raided five locations in South Florida on Tuesday while serving search warrants in an investigation into the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, it has been reported.
The search warrants include the homes and offices of Antonio Intriago and Walter Veintempilla – two businessmen suspected by officials in Haiti of financing and training those involved in the murder, the Miami Herald reported.
FBI agents and investigators with Homeland Security searching for financial records and other documents at the home of Veintempilla – president of Worldwide Capital Lending Group.
Jovenel Moise, 53, was murdered by an assassination squad made up mostly of Colombian mercenaries, but many details about the brutal attack have remained a mystery – as the country has erupted into political fighting and gun violence.
Investigators hope to determine whether Intriago and Veintemilla played a role in the July 7 murder, or committed other crimes.
Haitian authorities had linked them to Dr. Christian Emmanuel Sanon’s alleged plot to become president in South Florida.
Haitian authorities have alleged that Intriago, head of the CTU Security company in Doral, trained a group of Colombians involved in the murder, while Veintempilla’s Capital Lending Group allegedly funded their training.
Sources told the Miami Herald that US officials have yet to find evidence that the businessmen are aware of a plot to kill Moïse.
An FBI spokesperson told WPLG that the affidavits supporting the search warrants have been sealed under a court order and that he is prohibited from commenting further on the investigation.
Veintempilla, an Ecuadorian immigrant, was not seen in his home during the raid, WTVJ noted.
Haitian officials have linked Veintempilla to an alleged plot to kill Moise and give power to a Florida doctor
