Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested twice on Saturday during an Extinction Rebellion protest at The Hague where she warned the world was facing a “planetary emergency”.
On Saturday, the local police arrested Thunberg after tensions escalated between protesters and law enforcement officers as the demonstrators attempted to block a main road.
Officers then placed Thunberg on a bus full of other protestors and was promptly driven away.
The demonstrators were planning to block The Hague’s A12 highway for the 37th time, according to Extinction Rebellion organisers.
The march was organised to protest the Dutch government’s tax concessions and subsidies for companies that use fossil fuels or that are linked to the industry.
Thunberg and the other detained demonstrators were held for a short time before being released.
At previous demonstrations, police have driven protesters away from the event and released them at another location with no further consequences.
But shortly after her release, Thunberg rejoined the pack as they tried to block another road leading to a railway station.
One protestor held a banner that read: “This is a dead end street”, while the demonstrators chanted: “We are unstoppable, another world is possible”.
Thunberg was detained once again and driven off in a police van.
Before her second arrest, Thunberg declared the world was facing a “planetary emergency” and she would not stand for people becoming “climate refugees”.
