Authorities confirmed that six people died when the Cessna C550 business jet, owned by the race car driver, crashed while landing, according to local outlet WSOC-TV.

“Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Christina Grossu, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane…because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us,” Mitchell, who is known as internet personality Cleetus McFarland wrote on Facebook, via People. “We are devastated. I’m so sorry to share this.”

Biffle, 55, shared son Ryder, 5, with his wife of nearly three years Cristina, and Emma, 14, with ex-wife Nicole Lunders.

The Washington native began competing in NASCAR racing in 1995 and won the Busch Series championship in 2002. Most recently, he raced stock cars in the ARCA Menards Series West for Sigma Performance Services.

The plane was “way too low,” a witness from nearby Lakewood Golf Club told WSOC-TV, adding that there was “a huge explosion.”

According to the outlet, the crash occurred at around 10:20 a.m., when conditions were foggy at the airport, which is about 45 miles north of Charlotte, but officials have not yet determined the cause or released the names of those who were killed.
