A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal subway stabbing on Saturday of 14-year-old Ethan Reyes, police said.
The 15-year-old has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.
Reyes, a 14-year-old from North Yonkers, died after he was stabbed on a subway platform in Harlem Saturday afternoon, the NYPD said.
“We thank NYPD detectives, with whom we cooperated, for the rapid arrest of a suspect,” NYC Transit President Richard Davey said in a statement. “That he and the victim are said to have known each other further underscores the senseless nature of this tragic incident.”
Police say officers were called to the 137th Street-City College 1 train station just after 3 p.m. Saturday and found Reyes bleeding from his stomach area on a northbound 1 train platform.
According to the NYPD, EMS transported Reyes to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s, where he was pronounced dead.
NYPD Transit Chief Jason Wilcox said a preliminary investigation determined that the altercation began on the street and continued into the station.
A knife and what is believed to be a broomstick were found at the scene, Wilcox said.
According to Wilcox, MTA cameras provided clear pictures of individuals present at the time of the incident and were provided to investigators.
Reyes was bleeding from the back and abdomen area and was taken to a local hospital for treatment on wounds in his left hip area, according to Wilcox. Wilcox said the cause of those wounds, and the role of that individual in the incident, remains under investigation.
The motive for the incident is still under investigation, according to Wilcox.
