Over 750 blackouts documented globally in last 5-years (Report)Govt’s worldwide have Intentionally shut down the internet on at least 850 occasions in the last decade.
A staggering 90% taking place in the last 5-years, according to a report by Access Now & Jigsaw released Wednesday.
The report traces the spate of internet shutdowns back to the 5-day shutdown in Egypt in 2011.
The action sparked condemnation from some Western countries at the time, the authors write, but the number of blackouts has expanded since then.
According to a lawyer representing Access Now, the worrying trend is due to “more people are getting online and getting access to the internet,” adding: “governments see this as a threat, they start thinking the internet is something they need to control.”
