Police said the gang targeted rich businessmen, showing them videos of how the spectacles work and offering to take them to a secret location to try them out.
Police were investigating the gang’s claims to have sold three pairs in Bengaluru by getting models to pose nude in a darkened room, where the customers would be allowed to wear the spectacles.
Police said the gang, that included a Bengaluru-based businessman, was also planning to con businessmen in the city by offering to sell them a ‘rice pulling’ vessel that would bring them prosperity.
Police said the scamsters claimed the vessel was made of copper and iridium and had special powers as it had been struck by lightning. They played on superstitions of businessmen.
They gang — R Suriya, 39, of Bengaluru, Ghubabib, 37, Jithu Jayan
, 24, and S Irshad, 21, all three from Kerala
– got caught after police raided their hotel on a complaint from a local trader. He had been cheated of ‘5 lakh by Suriya
earlier promising to sell him antiques.
The trader learned Surya was in town again and visited him and asked for his money back.
Surya and associates threatened him with a fake gun. The trader complained to the police who arrested the gang.
All four of them were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
