Fukushima Farmers Fear Fresh Crisis Over Nuclear-Tainted Water
Japan plans to release more than 1MN tons of contaminated water (at safe levels according to Tokyo) from the crippled power plant into the sea after treating it.
The move has sparked concern from neighbors China and South Korea on top of primary industries. Farmers worry the release, planned for 2023, could hit produce prices – undoing a decade of slow recovery.
The water is to be processed to remove radioactive contamination other than tritium – which cannot be removed and is considered the least-toxic byproduct of atomic power.
