Facebook accused of misleading public over AI “surveillance advertising” targeting kids
A group of 46 advocacy groups have called out Facebook for apparently bending the truth on their targeted advertising to youngsters, after having banned advertisers from doing the same.
“While Facebook says it will no longer allow advertisers to selectively target teenagers, it appears Facebook itself continues to target teens, only now with the power of AI,” the group wrote in a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
An experiment found that Facebook was allegedly using an “extremely powerful algorithm that is able to predict advertising that each user may interact with,” which is “especially concerning” for teens with eating disorders or mental health issues who might be sent weight loss ads.
