Excess Ukraine Grain Eroding European Farmer Businesses… and Goodwill
East European farmers are reportedly miffed at the rush of grain from Ukraine into the region – claiming it is affecting their business and fast eroding political goodwill towards the country. (Bloomberg)
The surplus – created by infrastructure snags and unsold produce from the previous year – has taken a political turn in the shape of protests, as farmers suffer dropping prices for their produce due to a global downturn.
Politicians are changing their tune as well – Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who was offering $20mn to Ukraine to export grain, is now asking for it to be sent outside of the EU to protect the “Polish farmers and the local markets”.
