European Union set to demand Poland pay fines for disciplining the country’s judges
The EU executive will demand that Warsaw pay around $80 million worth of fines over the coming weeks for failing to scrap a heavily scrutinized system for disciplining judges. (Reuters)
“I regret that the situation of the rule of law in Poland shows no signs of improvement and judges continue to be under pressure,” the EU commissioner for Values and Transparency said.
January 11 was the deadline for Warsaw to tell the executive how it would dismantle the disciplinary chamber of the country’s Supreme Court, or be slapped with fines worth 1 million euros per day ($1.13 million).
