City officials in Odessa, Missouri said an issue with transmission lines means the entire city is without electricity Wednesday morning.
In a post on Facebook, the city said several Evergy transmission lines that feed their entire system are down.
They said the issue caused damage to the city’s power substation.
Odessa warned residents, “Please make plans for the electricity to be off for a majority of the day. If you know of elderly that need oxygen, please have them reach out to loved ones.
Our Emergency Management team will be meeting this morning and we will continue to update with more information soon.”
The Evergy spokesperson said the company hopes to have power restored by Wednesday evening.
In addition, Evergy is investigating outages in Higginsville and Concordia that are likely storm related.
A spokesperson with Evergy said the company is working to restore power to Odessa. The outage happened after an animal got into the city’s substation, Evergy said.
Equipment owned by both Odessa and Evergy was damaged by the event.
A nearby Evergy substation recognized the problem and isolated from the power grid, but before that happened, about a mile of Evergy transmission line caught fire.
That line will need to be rebuilt.
