A 63-year-old bus driver was arrested on Monday after allegedly exposing and touching himself in front of elementary school children who he had been driving home to their families.
Steve Wilkins is being accused of the sex crime, which reportedly occurred on four different occasions between January 30 to February 9, when the children of Suwanne Elementary School were on board his bus.
Wilkins, who was taken into custody and hit with charges including four counts of felony child molestation and four counts of misdemeanor public indecency, was immediately suspended from his job when the matter was raised by a concerned parent who said they had recently noticed the driver acting suspiciously, Principal Mary B. Taylor said.
Furthermore, the Gwinnett School Police believes that there was at least one child on board each time Wilkins exposed his body, though the ongoing investigation will help police establish more of an idea of how many people were actually on the bus with him.
Wilkins had been working with the district for about four years; two of which he spent working as a driver.
“All of our drivers have to pass a background check before they’re hired,” Bernard Watson, Director of Media and Community Relations for the school, shared in a statement.
Wilkins has since been released on a $9,600 bond until he’s due to appear in court.
