Egyptian Mummy “Unwrapped” After 3,500 Years With Scanning Tech
Egyptologists have unveiled the perfectly wrapped body of Pharaoh Amenhotep I, thanks to 3D topography scanning technology.
After three millennia, the experts were able to determine that the Pharaoh was 35 years old at the time of his death and circumcised. The study confirmed decoded hieroglyphics that had suggested the mummy had been unwrapped in the 11 century – likely to repair damage done by grave robbers.
The Pharaoh had been buried with 30 amulets and a golden girdle underneath his wrappings.
The technological breakthrough not only allowed them to preserve the condition of the sarcophagus contents, but also a “unique opportunity” to study mummification techniques.
