“TikTok Tourettes”: Doctors See Spike in Teen Girls with “TIC-LIKE” behaviors
Medical clinicians have reportedly witnessed a “marked increase” of severe tics and “tic-like” attacks since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. (Archives of Disease in Childhood)
The article notes a “new surge of referrals consists of adolescent girls” – with concern among the medical profession that social media, in particular TikTok, is “inadvertently reinforcing and maintaining symptoms.”
Odd tic-like behaviours were incredibly common in TikTok and YouTube videos of people claiming to be dealing with Tourette Syndrome, a particular popular trend is videos depicting ‘cooking with Tourette’s’ where content creators struggle to cook a meal whilst presenting with exaggerated tics.
