According to an official DNR report, the incident occurred in late-February in Mecosta County when Josh Reed and Jacob Robinson, conservation officers in DNR District 4, received multiple complaints of a subject bragging about shooting more than a hundred rabbits and stashing them in the back of his truck.
Robinson later observed a vehicle matching the suspect’s truck exiting a parking lot near the area where the officers received the complaints.
After stopping the vehicle, Robinson observed several rabbit feet sticking out from under a blanket in the bed of the truck. More than 100 cottontail rabbits were found, according to the DNR.
The COs followed the suspect to his residence where 37 more rabbits were found, bringing the total to 151, the DNR said.
The suspect said the rabbits had been collected by the suspect from a rabbit hunting tournament in Ionia County.
Charges are being sought in Mecosta County for over-possession of rabbit. In Michigan, cottontail rabbits and snowshoe hares can be hunted as part of small game season from Sept. 15 to March 31.
There is a daily limit of five and a possession limit of 10.
