Boston– Massive flames engulfed a motel and at least two other buildings early Monday, destroying the structures in Salisbury, Massachusetts.
The fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m. at Michael’s Oceanfront Motel at 40 Central Avenue. Heavy flames could be seen throughout the building.
Salisbury fire officials confirmed that multiple buildings were on fire. Mutual aid has been called in from numerous neighboring communities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
It was not immediately clear if anyone was hurt.
Whipping winds of 20 to 30 mph were making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze and keep it from spreading further. Fortunately, temperatures in Salisbury are in the mid-30s and above freezing.
Power was shut off on Central Avenue around 6 a.m. A warming and temporary shelter has been set up at the Hilton Senior Center at 43 Lafayette Road.
The state fire marshal’s office said it will be assisting Salisbury fire officials in determining the cause of the blaze.
