RawNews1st – CPD officers impounded 7 vehicles in connection to illegal drag racing and drifting last weekend. Since then, we have identified an additional 44 vehicles for impound under the new ordinance.
Getting your car impounded is expensive enough, but those participating in the reckless and dangerous behavior of illegal drag racing and drifting face additional fines of up to $10,000.
Street Racing/Drag Racing is an actual crime in Illinois. Street Racing/Drag Racing is a Class A misdemeanor in Illinois which carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in county jail and a maximum fine up to $2,500.
Street Racing/Drag Racing also carries a minimum fine up to $250.
City council members passed an ordinance last month that allows the city to impound vehicles that “drift” and drag race, even if cops aren’t there at the time. People hope this will urge those wreaking havoc on their neighborhood to stop.
“So happy to hear that that has been addressed,” Alexander said. “Very much so. But I think we need to get in front of it.”
Neighbors also suggested police add extra patrols in this area over the weekend, knowing how frequently it happens.
