Floyd County couple has been taken into custody after officials say they seriously injured their 6-month-old daughter.
Savannah Carol-Louise Cox and Shane Avery Moore are both charged with aggravated battery and first-degree cruelty to children.
According to a police report, an officer with the Rome Police Department was called to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center on Feb. 7, 2024, after receiving a report that an infant had been brought to the hospital.
The young girl reportedly had a broken femur and bruises on her face.
A nurse at the hospital told the officer that Cox and the infant’s great-grandmother had brought the infant in and that the two “seemed to ‘change their story’ by asking if the infant’s injuries could have occurred from a fall and then asking staff if the injuries could occur from someone ‘dropping her,'” the officer wrote.
When talking with the officer, Cox and her grandmother said that the infant had been taken to see a pediatrician earlier in the day and reportedly suggested that it was there that the girl suffered her injuries. Cox allegedly said that she noticed the girl’s injuries hours later and decided to go to the hospital.
Investigators say a full body scan revealed the child had 29 fractured bones that “appeared to be in different states of healing.” The injuries reportedly included damage to the girl’s ribs, legs, and arms.
After learning the results of the scan, officers and Department of Family and Children’s Services officials took the girl and her sister into protective custody.
Officials filed charges against Cox and Shane Avery Moore, the father of the girl, on Thursday. Officials have not shared details about the investigation other than the police report.
Investigators told FOX 5’s Kim Leoffler that it took time to get evidence to file the charges, and that they wanted to have the best case they could to get justice for the baby.
