Matthew Luckhurst, a former San Antonio police officer, who made headlines for allegedly offering a homeless man a sandwich filled with dog feces, has resurfaced in Benavides, Texas, as a law enforcement officer.
Luckhurst, 42, faced public outrage and was dismissed from the San Antonio Police Department in 2016 after Police Chief William McManus condemned his actions as “vile and disgusting.”
Despite the scandal that led to his initial dismissal, Luckhurst found his way back into law enforcement in Benavides, a town located approximately 150 miles from San Antonio. Benavides Police Chief Andre Hines defended the controversial hiring, stating that it reflects the department’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
The infamous incident that tarnished Luckhurst’s reputation involved an allegation from a fellow officer, claiming that Luckhurst had picked up feces from the street, placed it on bread inside a Styrofoam container, and left it beside a sleeping homeless individual.
Luckhurst, however, maintained his innocence, asserting that he intended for the homeless man to discard the sandwich, not consume it.
In a bizarre turn of events, Luckhurst faced another accusation in the same year when he was reported to have defecated in a female restroom at the San Antonio police department, smearing a feces-like substance on a toilet seat. Luckhurst did not deny his involvement in this incident.
Following a series of legal battles, Luckhurst managed to overturn his initial dismissal related to the poop sandwich incident in 2019. He briefly rejoined the force before a judge upheld his termination in 2020.
Luckhurst resurfaced in uniform in February 2022, this time in Floresville, a city approximately 30 miles away from San Antonio.
However, his return was short-lived as news of his reinstatement led to his subsequent dismissal within 10 months.
