Multiple law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation into a major drug trafficking case in Laurel County. Police brought down the organization leading the operation in London.
Greg Lane is home to a relatively quiet neighborhood, but Lonnie Morgan said the night of June 6 came as a rude awakening.
“I went out around midnight to throw something in my garbage can,” said Morgan. ”And there was probably six police officers down that road.”
That night the Laurel County Drug Interdiction Task Force raided Vernon Delph’s home a few doors down.
Police confiscated more than 11 pounds of meth, eight pounds of marijuana, and 23 firearms. Detectives also seized more than $15,000 in cash.
While the magnitude of this operation was shocking to see, Morgan said drugs aren’t a stranger to the area.
“Daily, we have investigations going and even the higher level investigations are always occurring here,” added Gilbert Acciardo, the public affairs deputy for the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.
Acciardo said meth use in particular is a problem. He said two other people allegedly involved with the same organization as Delph were arrested on June 20, Jay Boykin, of Georgia, and Caronda Tilman, of Tennessee. Police confiscated about nine pounds of meth from them.
“We’re fighting the battle and we’re having some great success with multiple agencies working together because you have more resources out there and you can do more with everybody working together on the same team,” said Acciardo.
